New weapons are at Leon’s disposal as well as some new stuff that you can buy. There is a dark merchant that flips his coat open like a perverted flasher and offers Leon his supplies, ranging from a 9mm handgun to a rocket launcher. He even offers to upgrade your weapons (for a price, of course). The shotgun makes a return (even a couple types) and is still one of the ultimate weapons to be had in the game. The other marvelous tool of destruction I must mention is the rifle(s), complete (purchasable) with a scope to zoom in on lackadaisical enemies and snipe them from afar. Some weapons are harder to keep ammo in stock for, but you can be sure that, unless you are either a horrible shot or a sadistic bastard, you will have ammo available for most if not all encounters. However, whether or not the weapon you have ammo left for is practical in the next situation to come, that is a different story, but that’s what aids in maintaining the intensity of the game. Better save that shotgun ammo, you’ll need it.
Other useful weapons are grenades (flash, incendiary and explosive) and, most of all, Leon can do more than pathetically “shake off” an enemy with a fantastic melee attack. He can either kick them back when they are dazed from some gun fire, or, if they are weakened enough, kick their head clean off. Better yet, it's even possible to do a head-crushing suplex on certain stunned enemies. Bitchen.
Herbs are not just “medicinal” in this game (just as in the others); they are life saving! You can still combine herbs to make more potent ones and even increase Leon’s overall health bar with the right combination. Keep your eyes out for the foliage of life!
Now why would I say something like “non-survival” in my introduction? It’s a survival-horror game, is it not? Sure it isn’t. At least, not on your first encounters with certain enemies. Boss-type battles are the most intense and really sponge the meaning from the word, and rightfully so. These here aren’t your run-of-the-mill brethrens of evil; Capcom did a number on design and implementation in which you engage bosses and even the random “run into” enemies, mostly because they are much more intelligent. There is certainly a much deeper strategy element embedded into this title and it makes for a much more –here’s this word again- intense survival-horror epic. Furthermore, Leon won’t be alone this whole adventure. Capcom seemed to have taken a liking to the role-shifting and has reflected that in this title. For the most part, you’ll be closely shadowed by the President’s daughter and must keep attuned to her needs, such as health and safety. If you sense a scary situation afoot, you can instruct her to wait, or if a place is available, to hide.
